Stardraw.com implements Fair Use policy for industry-leading symbols library

The Stardraw.com symbols library remains unparalleled as the largest, high quality line-art symbol resource available to the Pro AV industry. It contains over 110,000 product symbols from 976 manufacturers, each hand-crafted by Stardraw.com’s dedicated in-house Symbols Department, and is growing every day. In an effort to ensure that processes for requesting products remain transparent and democratic, Stadraw.com has introduced a Product Request Allowance that is specifically tailored to users’ License and Subscription status.

“Until now, any Stardraw Design 7 user with a current subscription has been able to request products with no limits or restrictions other than each request must be for a single product identified by a model number,” explains Stardraw.com CEO, Rob Robinson. “This is a perfectly good system for the vast majority of our users but, as we’ve come to realize, does leave rather a gaping hole if, for example, a distributor decides to request his entire product catalogue, regardless of whether their customers actually require those products. While it doesn’t happen often, when it does it can clog up the whole system and slows down the generation of genuinely requested products from the rest of our users. Therefore, we have decided to implement a Fair Use policy by means of a Product Request Allowance (PRA) which is based on the level of your subscription.”

Each license gives users access to a certain number of manufacturers; the new process gives users one outstanding request for every two manufacturers in their license. Thus, a Bronze bundle user can have up to ten requests outstanding at any time, and a Platinum user (the most popular bundle, with 70 manufacturers) can have up to 35 requests outstanding. When a requested product is published into the library, it no longer counts against the Product Request Allowance meaning you to make more requests on a rolling basis up to the limit of your allowance.

The new system will also have a positive impact on the issue of requests that can’t be fulfilled for some reason (usually due to a lack of data) known as Excluded Requests that continue to sit on the system, exacerbating the product request backlog. With the PRA in place, Excluded Requests will impact a user’s allowance – taking up usable request ‘slots’ – so the user can delete Excluded Requests to free up their allowance to make more requests and help reduce the backlog.

Finally, another cool feature is the ability to ‘upvote’ requests made by other users that are already on the system. This increases the priority ranking of those requests to enable them to be published even faster. Product Requests and the PRA are all handled through the new and improved website here:

“With a resource as massive as our Symbols Library, it’s important that we continue to refine our processes so that the user experience for requesting products remains as fluid and hassle-free as possible,” notes Robinson. “By implementing the Product Request Allowance, we are ensuring the system remains fair and democratic for all of our users as well as streamlining the process from our side so that requested products can be published even faster. Everybody wins.”
